Keystone Flops
Keystone Flops

Former President Jimmy Carter has now joined a list of people demanding President Obama not allow the construction of the Keystone Pipeline

If you want a fine example of how embedded we are in love of disagreement in this country then look at the keystone pipeline.

The pipeline is a project that consists of bringing a lot of temporary construction jobs all over the us in an attempt to build a connection between Western Canada where they pull tar sands oil out of the ground. The Keystone pipeline is an idea to directly pump the oil into a giant tube that will deliver it thousands of miles to Southeastern texas for refining. The hope is that it can somehow lower gas prices which even the most passionate supporters of the pipeline now admits is very unlikely. The fear is that it somehow will leak and cause heretofor untold environmental damage if not properly inspected but even the most passionate detractors admit that is highly unlikely as long as the big money in charge of it actually hire people to inspect the pipeline as they say they will.
The actual biggest concern though is the Aquifers. The gigantic bodies of water underground that can be severely damaged in the worst case scenario of God Forbid a rupture. So the pragmatic solution would be Move the pipeline right? That is a non starter says the big money behind the pipeline. The cost to move it is too much. In fact energy lobbying money has gone to help elect candidates who are running against state legislators in Nebraska who voted to move the pipeline away from the Aquifers.
Then there is the environmentalists on the left that when asked if moving the pipeline away from the aquifers would satisfy them and they say no, they would still protest the building and maintaining of it. IN other words we once again have 2 groups on opposite sides that refuse to bend.
The keystone pipeline is just a microcosm for whats going on in this overly entrenched society that refuses to embrace even the slightest pragmatic solutions for fear that agreeing on anything is a sign of weakness instead of what it actually is.. a sign of greatness
