Governor Quinn signed the bill Wednesday. “The Bill” is SB10 which legalizes Same Sex Marriage in the state of Illinois. It was a historical day in Illinois for equality. It was also a day that the rest of the nation should have paid attention to. At the bill signing today there was concern from many people, me included, that Pat Quinn would turn the whole thing into a “vote for Quinn” rally or that the State Democrats would use it to promote that they are the party of equality. That however was not the case. Some of the state of Illinois’ more well known Republicans were on hand for the historic occasion to remind everyone that this day would not have happened if it weren’t for brave GOP members who were willing to vote on behalf of equality and against some of the more conservative members of their party.
Judy Barr Topinka, Tom Cross, Pat Brady, and others were there to mark this amazing day.
The City of Springfield’s own Cory Jobe was there as well. Cory Jobe is a remarkable person. He is a proud Republican. He is a pragmatic Republican. He is an elected official with both a bipartisan following and combination of business, union and everyday average Joe support. He is also Openly Gay. In many places the last fact I share is what defines a person but with Cory Jobe it doesn’t ever seem to be an issue. In fact Cory Jobe is living proof that most of us care more about how our politicians spend our tax dollars and really dont care what they do in their bedroom. It is a fact that many people in the business of Politics need to be aware of, especially those in Cory Jobes political party.
On Wednesday Cory Jobe also got a chance to be our live reporter on the scene as he was there in the second row and gave us an eye witness account of the signing. He is a media natural. That is the second thing we learned about Cory Jobe today. The first thing of course was that he now like the rest of us will be able to get married when he falls in love. Congrats to Cory and everyone else who now can do so
