As the visually impaired Mr Magoo Would say
“Youve Done it again”
This time the Tea Party influenced GOP decided to kill the Farm Bill because it didn’t cut Food Stamps enough.
So let me get this right… They decided to hurt the Farmers because the Farm Bill didnt hurt poor people enough.
The GOP insisted on Cutting the Food Stamp program by dozens of Billions of dollars. By the way lets take ten seconds to consider who really gets the Food Stamp money. It is not money that goes into the savings accounts of those hated imaginary Escalade driving, Obama phone using Poor people that the Tea Party’ hates so much. It is money that is given to the less advantaged for the sole purpose of spending it at grocery stores which employ people and buy goods from Farmers. It is money that is immediately put back into the economy
The Republicans tried to make the punishment of the poor seem more palpable by putting it under the guise of “were trying to teach them responsibility” when they introduced the Sutherland amendment which increased a work requirement that the disadvantaged had to meet in order to be eligible for stamps. They even took part of the idea for the amendment from a Bill Clinton plan in the mid 90’s. The only difference is the unemployment rate under Clinton was 4% and there were jobs available for people who wanted to work. Now however I dont know where the GOP is looking but there arent any jobs out there. College graduates cant find work so how is someone who lives underneath the poverty line supposed to get a fourth job in order to meet an income/work requirement to get something that helps them eat?
Bottom line is the almost trillion dollar farm bill that would put nearly a trillion dollars into the economy failed because the far right of the GOP decided that they wanted to cut the Food Stamp program more than the 20 Billion dollars it was already gonna be cut. That is sad.
The biggest hurt in this bills failure though is the economy itself that is trying to get better and a bill like the farm bill that leads directly to jobs has now been defeated on Capitol Hill because the Far right wing couldn’t agree on how much they want the poor to suffer.
Oh Congress, You’ve done it again!!
