The Sangamon Valley Community Orchestra invites you to Forces of Destiny: Verdi & Tchaikovsky! The Sangamon Valley Community Orchestra closes the 2012-2013 season with its new Music Director and Conductor, Aaron Kaplan on Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the Hoogland Center for the Arts, LRS Theater. The concert will feature Verdi’s Overture to “La Forza del Destino,” Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme Op. 33 featuring Amy Flores on cello, and Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake Suite Op 20a. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM. National Safe Boating Week May 19-25
May 19 through May 25 is National Safe Boating Week. The kick off event for this week is the "Ready, Set, Wear It!" Life Jacket World Record Day.to be held on May 18. This is a campaign established by the National Safe Boating Council to promote the importance of boating safety and life jacket wear through community outreach and education. On that day, boating partners throughout the USA, Canada and other countries will put on life jackets to try and set a new world record for the number of people wearing their life jackets at one time. Last year's record was set by 3993 participants at more than 145 events around the world.
The Land of Lincoln Power Squadron is hosting this officially recognized event on Lake Springfield at Lindsay Bridge boat ramp on May 18 at 10:00 am. Anyone who wishes to come and wear a life jacket to help set the new world record is welcome. There will also be boating safety information, boating class schedules and other information provided by LLPS and their boating safety supporters. Several groups and agencies are joining together in supporting this event.

Girls on the Run of Central Illinois commences spring programs
Girls on the Run of Central Illinois is excited to announce the start of the spring 2013
season, which is the largest program enrollment to date with 664 girls participating
in the healthy lifestyle curriculum. The Girls on the Run program is being offered at
38 schools with 49 teams overall this spring. Girls on the Run will serve girls across
Sangamon County as well as Christian, Logan, Macon and Morgan counties. Over
660 girls in third through eighth grades will participate this season, which will run
from March to May. The record spring enrollment will also celebrate the 3,000th
girl to go through the local program.

18M&M Foundation annual charity poker run on the last Saturday in July (27th this year)
The run will begin at On The Rox on the square in Jacksonville, IL. We have a pre-run party from 11am-2pm. There will be $1 burgers, drink specials, DJ (unless we get a band), prizes, games, and a free bikini bike wash. We leave On The Rox at 2pm. The stops will be:

Sleepy's - Bluffs, IL
Big Daddy's Doghouse - Winchester, IL
The Triangle - Woodson, IL
We will then return to On The Rox in Jacksonville. We will have a 50/50 drawing and pay out to the high hand and low hand.

The DSI Image & Design Council recognizes the importance and value of public art to our local community as well as becoming a cultural tourism attraction. The Council is proud to champion the new ARTIFICATION downtown mural project for 2013 and has a vision of four large scale murals created by local artists with the first being launched at the Taste of Downtown, July 12 & 13. As with any project of this size and scope, funding is needed to secure necessary supplies, equipment and cover artist fees. The estimated cost of each mural is $10,000. The Sangamon Valley RC Flyers will be hosting the 4th annual Open House Fly In for Autism Fundraiser on June 29th 2013 at Holmes Field 8113 N. Pawnee Rd. Pawnee Il. (approximately 1 mile south of Lincoln Memorial Gardens on the Pawnee Rd. Raffle tickets will be available on the day of the event for a large selection of items including a large flat screen TV. These tickets will be sold for $1 each and discounted for multiple ticket purchases up to $100 for 250 tickets. In addition to these tickets we also will be selling tickets for a $1000 cash prize drawing.
