Springfield, Chatham Receive State Transportation Grants

Springfield is set to receive $1 million out of $50 million available statewide to use for downtown streetscape projects, including Capitol Avenue.

The money comes from the Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program.

Public Works Director Mark Mahoney says the city initially requested $1.9 million, so some projects might have to change in scope. They're set to get underway this summer.

Also receiving money were Chatham and Jacksonville. Chatham will get a little more than $350,000 for Phase Two of the Plummer Boulevard bike and pedestrian trail, and Jacksonville is in line for more than $2 million to help with its downtown plaza project.
