Springfield announces tree removal program

The City of Springfield’s Office of Public Works will begin taking requests regarding the removal of sweetgum trees. This program is for Springfield residents with sweetgum trees on public right of way and that are in undesirable locations such as near sewers inlets, sidewalks and where streetlights might be obstructed. Residents with a tree in a location approved for removal will pay $250 to the City’s Tree Replacement Program and will have the opportunity for a new tree variety to be planted by the City in a new approved location. Public Works crews will remove the entire tree, stump and will backfill the hole. Requests for removal and replacement of sweetgum trees can be made by calling the Office of Public Works at 789-2255 between 8 a..m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Public Works will be taking requests through December 14, 2012.
