Unemployment in Illinois held steady from September to October, with the 8.8 percent rate unchanged, the Illinois Department of Employment Security announced Friday. The state’s workforce did add 4,800 jobs in October. A year ago, the unemployment rate was 10 percent.
Those numbers only tell part of the story, though. “The unemployment rate measures those people who are out of work and looking for work,” says spokesman Greg Rivara. “It is not tied to those individuals who are collecting unemployment insurance, nor does it reflect those individuals who believe that they are working at a position that is significantly below their skill set.”
Rivara says there are gains in leisure/hospitality and education/health; the former because the holidays are coming, and the latter because that sector is somewhat recession-proof.
