For Amtrak’s fiscal year, which ended Sept. 30, more than 31.2 million passengers made a new record. On the Chicago-St Louis routes – the Lincoln Service and the Texas Eagle – the figure was 675,000, also a record.
In addition to factors such as traffic congestion and the price of gasoline, Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari cites two.
“We have our new e-ticketing mechanism, so you don’t even have to go to a station to get a ticket beforehand," he says. "We did a lot in this year with our partners at the Illinois (Department of Transportation) to make the busing that we were doing with the track improvements work better than in past years.”
