The Springfield Mass Transit District received a large grant to replace it's ageing compressed natural gas station. The unit allows SMTD to compress natural gas from utility lines to use for fuel for half of the bus fleet. Managing Director Frank Squires said the replacement is needed because the 15 year old station is 3 years past it's life expectancy. Squires says that the district will now move forward to bid out the project, which is expected to cost over 1 million dollars, all of which will be covered by the federal grant.
