Illinois Senator Wants Legislative Leader Term Limits.

The idea of term limits is one a recent poll of Illinoisans shows is gaining favor, and a state lawmaker says it’s time to hold legislative leaders and committee chairs to such limits.

State Sen. Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) has introduced a constitutional amendment that would force those officeholders to take four years off from those positions after four consecutive years on.

The sponsor says Senate President John Cullerton (D-Chicago) has no problem with the idea. “He’s supportive of it,” says Kotowski.

Supportive enough to impose a term limit on his own leadership? “I’ve reached out to the Senate President,” Kotowski responds, “and he understands that I’m introducing this legislation, and I think this is an opportunity to get more legislation passed that changes the way business is done down there” in Springfield.

No response from Cullerton’s office early this week.
