Springfield is on its way to retrofitting two-dozen city vehicles to run on propane or gasoline.
Alderman narrowly approved an ordinance allotting company CleanFuel USA $240,000 for the conversions. The initial expense will be reimbursed by state and federal grants. The measure picked up more opposition over the past week as Mayor Mike Houston had to cast a tiebreaking Yes vote to pass it.
He says federal grants are assured, but admits state money could be a little trickier. Even so, Houston says using primarily propane in two-dozen vehicles will save tens of thousands of dollars a year.
