A faith-based organization is calling on IDOT to create jobs for low-income minorities. Gamaliel’s “Fire of Faith” campaign aims to use community organizing to create living wage jobs. Gamaliel’s executive director Ana Garcia-Ashley says a report shows community organizing will increase opportunities in construction projects that impact communities. Garcia-Ashley says part of how that’s accomplished is by directing a portion of state and federal money used for construction projects to training programs for community members. The report recommends government leaders invest in community organizing as the most cost effective way to create jobs, stimulate the economic recovery and build a sustainable and equitable economy.
