A Secretary of State subcommittee to study the issuance and use of disabled parking placards is beginning its work.
A “top to bottom” review of the way disabled parking placards is what Secretary of State Jesse White expects from the subcommittee when they release their findings, possibly before the end of the year.
Sam Skinner, who heads the subcommittee, says the one goal is to create a statewide database to manage the disabled parking placard system better. The secretary of state also is looking to implement a paperless system by which doctors can verify patients’ needs for a parking placard.
The subcommittee will also assess how municipalities currently deal with temporary disabled parking permits, which are sometimes granted for short-term disabilities usually related to surgery.
Additional meetings and hearings are likely to be scheduled for the coming months.
