State Rep. Smith Expelled

Derrick Smith is no longer part of the Illinois House. Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan announced the 100-6 vote to remove Smith Friday afternoon.

Smith was arrested in March for allegedly accepting a seven-thousand-dollar bribe to make sure a daycare got a state grant.  The Chicago Democrat has denied the charges, but declined to testify at several House hearings on the matter.  He becomes the first Illinois representative removed from office since 1905.

Smith is still on the November ballot after handily winning his primary contest in March. That means he could have to be re-expelled if he wins.
