New Cemetery Rules In Place

With the final rules now adopted by the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation, the state's Cemetery Oversight Act provides applications for cemeteries to obtain a license to operate or to register as being fully or partially exempt.

Cemeteries are now required to provide a standardized price list to consumers and enter into signed contracts with those who purchase burial rights. The new rules also establish a statewide database, which has so far had over 67-thousand burials entered throughout Illinois.

Some exemptions are available for family cemeteries, those with no burials within the past ten years, and those under three acres in size.
