Capitol City Celebration will go as planned, despite heat

The Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week this year, and one of Springfield's largest celebrations has had a hard time finding volunteers.

Capital City Celebration coordinator Robbie Johnston says the event is ready to go as planned at 3:00 this afternoon despite the predicted 100 degree high, but they could still use some help -- especially afterwards.

Events today include live music, inflatable games, face painting, beauty pageants and a fireworks display set to go off downtown around 9:30pm.

Two other Springfield events, the Pasfield House observance and Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party, have been cancelled. That follows a trend of communities statewide cancelling their events because of the heat and dry conditions.
