The pressure's on the Springfield Jaycees to throw a spectacular Fourth of July bash in the face of communities statewide cancelling their celebrations. Mount Pulaski has cancelled its fireworks. The Clara Irwin's Strawberry Party at the Elijah Iles House and the Fourth of July at the Pasfield House Inn have been cancelled because of the heat.
Robbie Johnston, Capital City Celebration coordinator, says having fewer options might impact her event's attendance -- but the day of the week will likely impact it more. She says many people have to work Thursday so they haven't gone out of town.
Admission to the Capitol Avenue festival is free and open to all ages, but Johnston hopes people will buy a few concessions to support the Jaycees. Live music, beauty pageants, face painting and other kids activities will be available.
The Capital City Celebration starts at 3:00 this afternoon, with the fireworks display scheduled for 9:30. More information is available at springfield-jaycees-dot-org.
