Investigative Committee To Release Derrick Smith Report

State Representative Derrick Smith is set to find out if his colleagues think he should stay in the legislature.

The special investigative committee charged with looking into the federal bribery charge against Smith is releasing its findings this afternoon. Smith and his attorney appeared before the committee last month but would not say much about the strategy they plan to use in his defense. They did say that Smith was innocent and that he planned on clearing his name. He's accused of accepting seven thousand dollars cash in exchange for securing a state grant for a Chicago daycare.

If the committee finds Smith should be expelled from the legislature, a larger group will review the findings before it goes before the full House for a vote.
