‘Gravity’ defies box office record

LOS ANGELES (AP) — There’s no defying “Gravity.”

The Sandra Bullock-George Clooney space drama “Gravity” has the best October opening ever – with more than $55 million at the weekend box office.

Sandra Bullock said “the most bizarre series of contraptions” helped her simulate weightlessness in “Gravity.” There was a robot arm like the kind that’s used in making cars, a bunch of wires to hold her up and even a bicycle seat on top of a tall pole. They were all in a black box-like room where Bullock spent virtually the entire time filming.

The film about personal struggles set in deep space is also best opening for both of the stars.

“Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2″ dropped to second this weekend. “Runner Runner,” starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, opened in third.

“Prisoners” and “Rush” round out the weekend’s top five.
