Washington Park Dog Area Gets Public Hearing

It was standing room only as nearly 100 people attended a public hearing about the proposed dog area in Washington Park.

The Springfield Park District Board mainly listened and took notes.  The family of Dr. David Hoelzer, a driving force behind the idea, was in attendance despite the sudden death of Hoelzer late last month.

Bill Hoelzer, one his sons, says the family is still willing to provide much of the seed money if the dog park is approved.

“It really comes from the fact that we lived next to the park for more 28 years and its that deep  love of place.  My dad was here first thing in the morning and then before he went to bed walking the golden retreivers.  He just felt that love swell up in his heart” says Hoelzer

The Hoelzer family is willing to provide up to half the $100-thousand cost to build the facility. About two dozen made public remarks, many of them nearby residents, most of them saying they are not anti-dog, they just don’t want the dog area to be located at Washington Park.

The park board didn’t indicate when it might vote on the proposal.
