Veterans Honored at the Fair

Veterans Honored at the Fair

As is tradition at the Illinois State Fair, the first Sunday of the proceedings was set aside to honor veterans.

The national Veterans of Foreign Wars commander addressed a crowd under sunny skies at the Director’s Lawn.

“Battlefield medicine has advanced to such a point,” John Stroud said, “that if a wounded hero gets medical attention within the first five minutes of injury, they’ve got a 97 percent survival rate.” He said he recently visited a man who lost both legs – but was eager to return to the field.

Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka and state agriculture director Bob Flider – both Army parents – spoke, as did the son of a Navy veteran, Gov. Pat Quinn.
