Teacher Is Jailed in Alleged Bomb Threat

Teacher Is Jailed in Alleged Bomb Threat

A western Illinois high school special education teacher accused of threatening to blow up her school is scheduled to learn whether she’ll be eligible for bond.

A federal magistrate in East St. Louis is to hear arguments today over the prosecutors’ request that Michelle Smith remain jailed without bond.

The 36-year-old Jerseyville woman is accused in Calhoun County and federal court of leaving a computer-generated note April 28 in a restroom at the Calhoun County High School in Hardin. That’s about 40 miles northwest of St. Louis.

The letter prompted an evacuation of the 170-student school, but no bomb was found.

Smith was arrested the next day, and the school district is seeking her ouster.

Her public defender argues Smith had no means by which to carry out the threat.

Rauner: Fight Over Term Limits is Not Over

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Rauner is publicly calling upon Illinois' appellate and Supreme Courts to approve a term limit referendum
