For the second year, dozens of Springfield School District 186 students were able to enjoy their summer along with classroom instruction.

“Camp Compass” — run by Springfield’s Family Service Center — hosted 75 homeless and low-income students to ensure there was not a drop-off in retention of what they learned last school year.

Program director Molly Berendt says the school district is a partner in their effort.

“They are kind enough to let us be in Ridgely Elementary School.  We have full access to their janitorial staff which takes care of our every need and because we are able to be in a school, we have access to the summer food program,” says Berendt.

Math and reading was accompanied with field trips and out-of-classroom activities and the camp is staffed with volunteers.
