The Southern Illinois University system’s governing board has approved two fee proposals to help sports programs and the student newspaper on the Carbondale campus. It voted Tuesday to increase the student intercollegiate athletic fee by $9 per semester and charge $9 per semester to keep the struggling Daily Egyptian newspaper afloat.
Aldermen approved the variance on a 9-1 vote, Ward 3 Alderman Doris Turner was the lone no vote.
