The next time the subject is base closures, Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon hopes the three military bases in Illinois are not considered.

Simon, chairman of the Interagency Military Base Support and Economic Development Committee, says an economic development study should bolster the case for Great Lakes Naval Station at North Chicago, Scott Air Force Base at Belleville, and the Rock Island Arsenal.

“What we might learn is a number to put on that adjective of huge,” Simon says. “We think it’s going to be useful for all of us, and particularly for our members of Congress and our U. S. senators, to be able to advocate for how Illinois will eventually come out in that base closing process.”

Simon says she expects the federal government to take this up eventually, and she wants to be prepared.
