A crash that killed four people on I-55 has the governor talking about highway safety.

The crash occurred Monday afternoon in Channahon when a tractor-trailer rear-ended three vehicles that had stopped when traffic became congested in a construction zone.

Gov. Pat Quinn says the situation demands a review. “I will talk to our State Police director as well as our transportation secretary about the events of yesterday and about the events anywhere in Illinois. We want to reduce highway fatalities to zero,” he said.

Two of the victims were from Urbana: Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11. The other victims were Vicky L. Palaciocs, 54, of Coal City and Ulrike P. Blopleh, 48, of Channahon.

Police say the truck driver, Francisco Espinal Quiroz of Leesburg, Ind., was speeding in the construction zone. He has been charged with failure to reduce speed to prevent an accident and with making false entries in his logbook.

Illinois now has had 468 deaths on the roads this year. Last year at this time there had been 550.

Social Service Groups Sue Governor for $100M Past Due

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Five dozen social service agencies working without pay for nearly a year because of the Illinois state budget stalemate are suing Gov. Bruce Rauner.
