Illinois has filed its appeal over the denial of federal funds for disaster relief from the November tornadoes.

At issue is $6.1 million for local governments in nine counties. The federal government said no because the damage didn’t amount to enough, but Gov. Pat Quinn says the damage is more than FEMA realizes, especially in Washington, Ill.

“It took an enormous effort by the unit of government, the municipal government of Washington, Ill., and many other governments, the counties and so on, to clean that up. They’re still working on it. So we hope the federal government, FEMA, will look at our appeal and give us the relief for our units of government,” Quinn said.

Quinn says the situation is compounded by multiple disasters last year, including floods, stressing small counties and cities.

The denial affected Champaign, Douglas, Grundy, Massac, Tazewell, Vermilion, Washington, Wayne and Woodford counties. The $6.1 million would have covered expenses including emergency protective measures, debris removal, and repairing or replacing government-owned facilities.

Aid to individuals and businesses has been approved and the money is already flowing, including $2 million from FEMA for individuals and $8.7 million in low-interest loans from the Small Business Administration.
