More affordable housing is on its way to Springfield’s east side.

The Nehemiah Project, sponsored by Calvary Baptist Church, already consists of 70 scattered site homes and Mayor Mike Houston says this latest phase demonstrates different Springfield organizations working together to provide a basic human need.

“The Nehemiah Project and this expansion of 30 units is critically important in our efforts to provide affordable housing in this community,” says Houston.

Illinois Department of Housing Development Director Mary Kenney was on had to help turn over a shovelful of dirt. She says many communities don’t accept developments like this but Springfield is different.

“It is great to┬ábe in Springield where you really value the importance affordable housing for working families,” Kenney told the crowd.

Pastor Silas Johnson, who helps the lead the effort, says that about a dozen of the homes could be move-in ready by Christmas.
