The group Mothers against Drunk Driving is giving Illinois its highest grade for efforts to prevent DUI.

Illinois is one of nine states to get a five-star rating. Sam Canzoneri, executive director of MADD-Illinois, says among those deserving credit are the cops.

“It all starts with law enforcement going out and actually initiating the traffic stop and taking the offenders off the road, and whether it be the Illinois State Police or law enforcement within any given jurisdiction, they’re out working very, very hard,” he said.

The group also credits the state for adopting the breath-alcohol ignition interlock device, so that DUI offenders must test negative for alcohol before their car will start. There are 12,000 of those in use now in Illinois.

“It is a special honor for Illinois to receive the highest rating possible, earning five stars from MADD, for our efforts to combat drunk driving,” Secretary of State Jesse White said.

The group has volunteers engaged in a court-watchers program, which tracks DUI cases to pressure prosecutors to take DUI allegations seriously.
