Kirk: “Trust but Verify” on Iran

Kirk: “Trust but Verify” on Iran

U.S. Sen. Mark S. Kirk (R-Ill.) says the United States must keep its eyes open as the new nuclear deal with Iran goes into effect.

Iran has now suspended high levels of uranium enrichment, meaning certain economic sanctions against the country will be lifted for six months as a long-term agreement is negotiated. Kirk, however, is concerned about comments from Iranian officials that enrichment can be quickly restarted if talks break down.

“When they say everything can be reversed in a day, that appears to be bad faith,” Kirk said. “So we are not in this negotiation just to make Iran non-nuclear in one day.”

Kirk believes the U.S. must verify that Iran is holding up its end of the agreement throughout the process. He would not write off the possibility of drawing up new sanctions to be imposed if Iran fails to cooperate.
