Springfield Ward 6 Alderman Cory Jobe and the mayor’s office don’t see eye to eye on what the city’s chronic nuisance ordinance says.

But Jobe is still moving forward with a measure encouraging the city to use it to start shutting down the Bel Aire Motel.

Jobe said the city needs to use everything in its arsenal against the Bel Aire’s owner.

“We have a property owner who has ignored the system,” Jobe said. “We have cataloged over 1,000 code violations. The next round of code violations are going to the city admin. court not one day, but two days, Aug. 21 and 22.”

The city says each room needs to be treated individually. Given the transient nature of the building, the city says it would be hard to string enough problems together to start said proceedings. But Jobe things the ordinance applies to property owners as well as individual units.

Rauner Issues Pardons

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Rauner granted 10 and denied 200 clemency petitions.
