Immigrants Rally for Tax Vote

Immigrants Rally for Tax Vote

Immigrant groups in Illinois are supporting the plan to make the temporary income tax hike permanent.

Organizations representing Latino, Asian, and Arab immigrants predict that if the income tax rate is allowed to fall to 3.75 percent, programs that assist immigrants with child care, domestic violence, food stamps and more would be affected.

Maria Pesqueria, executive director of Mujeres Latinas en Accion in Chicago, said paying less in income taxes wouldn’t make up for those programs being reduced or cancelled.

“Losing that would not, in any way, come anywhere close to the negative impact, financially, to families and communities of the services that they depend on,” Pesqueria said.

Immigrant groups said they hope to drum up more support for passing the governor’s budget during their lobby day today at the Capitol.
