U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-East Moline) is among a group of lawmakers authoring a letter to U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), who chairs the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

“We’ve got a problem here. We’ve got families who aren’t going to be able to afford these prices, and certainly we have to address this issue of the shortage, so what we’re saying is let’s get to the bottom of it, let’s make sure that we can figure out this pricing, and what’s the deal with the shortage,” she said.

According to the Energy Information Administration, last week’s residential propane prices in the Midwest averaged $2.40 per gallon, compared to $1.74 per gallon a year ago. The situation is even worse this week. Bustos says she is hearing reports that in some areas of the Midwest, prices are already as high as $4 per gallon and are expected to rise to $5.50 per gallon.
