Hundreds Rally to Protest Looming Tax Cut

A day after Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago) said he doesn’t have enough votes to support keeping the current 5 percent income tax rate in place, hundreds of advocates for keeping the tax turned up at the Capitol to urge the public to push lawmakers to support it.

They say without the revenue the income tax now provides, many vulnerable citizens would suffer.

“We have just as many people who need health care, just as many people who rely on human services – just as many people needing protection offered by public safety services,” said Kathi Griffin, vice president of the Illinois Education Association. She also says education would take a hit without the extra revenue.

The 5 percent income tax rate is scheduled to fall to 3.75 percent at the end of the year, unless lawmakers vote to extend it or make it permanent, which the governor is urging them to do, but so far without success.
