Hollywood Comes to Springfield

Hollywood Comes to Springfield

Hollywood’s version of Abraham Lincoln will be on display in Springfield.

An exhibit of props, sets, and costumes from the award-winning film Lincoln will open Friday at Springfield’s Union Station, across the street from the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

Chris Wills, spokesman for the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, believes there’s value in showing how Hollywood interprets history. “It can teach people something about the intersection of movies and history, and the lengths to which they go to get things right, and places where sometimes storytellers have to fudge things a little bit,” Wills said.

Many of the furniture pieces on display are not reproductions, but actual Civil War-era antiques used to give the film an authentic look. The items are on loan from director Steven Spielberg, and the museum expects the exhibit to stay open for several years.

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Five dozen social service agencies working without pay for nearly a year because of the Illinois state budget stalemate are suing Gov. Bruce Rauner.
