Girl, 12, Dies in Fall at Shawnee

Southern Illinois officials say a 12-year-old girl has died after she fell about 100 feet from a rocky area in the Shawnee National Forest.

The Gallatin County girl died Tuesday evening after falling at the Garden of the Gods.

Officials haven’t released the girl’s name or said what led to her fall in the forest’s Chimney Rock area.

The rock formations and cliffs that make up the Garden of the Gods make the area popular with hikers and rock climbers.

Saline County officials and the U.S. Forest Service are investigating.
