On the last day to comment on the draft rules for regulated hydraulic fracturing in Illinois, the forces against “fracking” made their numbers known.

About two dozen people from Southern Illinois brought 1,700 petition signatures, having already submitted more than 20,000 comments online, to Illinois Department of Natural Resources headquarters in Springfield.

“Any atrocity to our well-being, any atrocity to take away our Constitutional rights, any atrocity to possibly give someone cancer – yeah, I would say, impeachment absolutely” is a possibility, said one organizer, Georgia de la Garza of West Frankfort. “I don’t want a governor and a leader taking me and my children to that place.”

“These inadequate rules will leave nothing but legacies of disasters to those who voted on this irresponsible law and abandoned Illinois taxpayers who will indeed foot the bill for public health issues like cancer and leukemia,” said another protestor, Tabitha Tripp of Union County.

De la Garza said those who would comment at public hearings were told “the train has already left the station.” She says she hopes the governor’s office and DNR hear otherwise.
