Durbin: Illinois GOP Hits New Low With Phony Press Release

Durbin: Illinois GOP Hits New Low With Phony Press Release

A war of phony press releases has broken out between the state’s Republicans and Democrats.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s campaign started it by sending out the information for two closed-to-the-public events for Bruce Rauner. The e-mails claimed Rauner was “emerging from hiding” to answer questions about how his daughter got admitted into a selective Chicago high school.

Then the Illinois Republican Party responded with an e-mail that appeared to be from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s staff, that claims Durbin will call on Quinn to testify on the problems with the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.

Durbin and Quinn appeared together at the train station in Bellwood, and the phony release claimed Durbin would tell Quinn “I will not lie down on the tracks for you while the federal prosecutor train is coming through.”

Durbin says this is getting out of hand. “Whoever’s the author of this ought to be ashamed of themselves. That is a new low,” Durbin said. “For goodness sakes, let’s maintain some credibility with the public and with the media in terms of our releases.”

Durbin did not call on Quinn to appear before the Legislative Audit Commission next month, saying that he wasn’t aware of the NRI’s existence until earlier this year.
