Durbin, Gutierrez Hope 2014 Is the Year for Immigration “Reform”

Durbin, Gutierrez Hope 2014 Is the Year for Immigration “Reform”

Two of the state’s members of Congress are calling for a new push to pass comprehensive immigration reform.

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Chicago) believe that now that the farm bill and the debt ceiling have been dealt with, Congress needs to re-visit the immigration reform. Gutierrez feels any new effort should start in the Republican-controlled House, and then move to a conference committee.

“I’ma tell you, Dick, my job is to get you a bill out of the House of the Representatives so you can negotiate with those Republicans,” Gutierrez said. “But I want to get you the best bill possible so you have the least negotiating to do.”

Durbin says it’s important for lawmakers to act quickly. “My fear is that they run out the clock, that’s my biggest fear,” Durbin said.

House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has said the chances of passing a bill this year are slim, citing concerns about the Obama administration enforcing existing immigration laws.
