Dixon Mayor Pleads: Keep Walgreens a US Company

The mayor of Dixon, Ill., says Walgreen Co. would be wrong to move its corporate headquarters to Europe.

Okay, but what does this have to do with Dixon?

“Charles Walgreen grew up in Dixon,” says mayor Jim Burke, “when he was 20 years old, which was in 1893, he moved to Chicago; he bought his first drugstore in 1901.”

The company is considering, essentially, selling itself to a foreign firm and then moving its headquarters there from Deerfield.

Yes, but it’s legal – and cities and states are engaged in whatever it takes to lure business from somewhere else, right? The mayor agrees but also decries “this cannibalism” between the states, which ought to, he says, work as a group to pitch the Midwest as a destination.

Burke says he has been in contact with representatives of the Walgreen Co. He made his announcement Wednesday outside a Walgreens in Dixon.
