Conceal Carry to Present Challenges

Police and legislators say the state’s concealed carry law will provide some challenges to law enforcement and those licensed to carry a weapon.

The biggest challenge may be for permit holders to remember where they can and cannot carry a concealed weapon. Nearly two dozen places are off limits, such as schools and government buildings, along with any private business that posts a sign banning firearms.

State Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) says it’s the license holder’s responsibility to be aware of these restrictions. “If they’re carrying in an area that they can’t, then they may lose that license, they may be fined, it may be taken away or revoked and in some cases, it may draw a (unlawful use of a weapon) charge,” Mautino said.

License holders will also have to present that license to any police officer when asked. Illinois State Police say they’re trained to assume a weapon may be present during any encounter, but officers will be more cautious once licenses are issued.
