Farmer: Employment Outlook Still Promising Despite Recent Job Cuts

Despite the announcement of two major employers cutting jobs this week, Springfield Economic Director Mike Farmer is still confident the local economy is rebounding.

While health care and retail sectors continue to get the most attention, the city is also robust in another area.

“I wouldn’t gloss over manufacturing. While Springfield’s heyday, halycon days of manufacturing are behind us, Springfield still has a lot of strong manufacturers,” Farmer says.

Earlier this week, AT&T announced it’s moving more than 200 call center jobs to Rantoul and St. John’s Hospital says it’s cutting more than 40 managerial jobs.

Farmer says the AT&T building on West Wabash should draw interest and says he has had conversations with the company on how they plan to market the 3-year old facility.

He also says businesses in the area indicate they are increasing their hiring in the coming months.
