Assuming Bruce Rauner is the front-runner in the Republican primary for governor, can any of the other candidates stage a comeback?

State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) made a comeback in the closing days of the 2010 campaign, eventually eking out the nomination by 193 votes. Can he do it again, this time against Rauner and his millions?

“All our internal data and our anecdotal data shows through our grass-roots effort that yes, he’s spending millions and millions of dollars and has developed a great deal of name identification, but to a large extent it’s superficial,” he said.

The circumstances this year are different, though. In 2010, Brady benefitted from the top two contenders, Andy McKenna and Jim Ryan, slugging it out, spending money to drive down support for the other. This time, Rauner is the clear leader in public opinion polls, and attacks on him have only recently begun.

State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale), whom Brady beat by a nose last time, says the recent debates will help the less-wealthy candidates attract the attention of voters.
