Springfield Ward 5 Alderman Sam Cahnman has been been censured by the state’s Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission for misrepresenting how he obtained a page from a judge’s calendar.

A censure is the lowest form of punishment.

“The court justices were not of the opinion that it was of a nature or a severity as to warrant a removal from the practice of law,” said ARDC Deputy Chief Jim Grogan.

Cahnman was punished for copying a page from a judge’s calendar while representing a client in a child support case.

“This whole thing is unfortunate and arose from a simple misunderstanding between me, a person in the judge’s office and the judge,” said Cahnman in an e-mailed statement. He noted the misunderstanding arose due to a one line response to a judge’s question during a status hearing. Cahnman said the ARDC hearing board found it misleading because of what he didn’t say.

“I respect our Supreme Court. However, I regret the fact that the Court takes very few case and did not take my case for a full review,” said Cahnman.

The punishment does not mean Cahnman is suspended from practicing law but he is put on notice that further misconduct will not be tolerated by the commission.
