Buyer Beware When Choosing Electric Company

Buyer Beware When Choosing Electric Company

Some area consumers are being pressured to select an alternative electric supplier through aggressive and,in some cases, misleading sales pitches.

Sangamon County Administrator Brian McFadden says since the County Electric Aggregation Consortium suspended its relationships with companies besides Ameren, those companies are using high-pressure sales tactics to retain customers.

“We just wanted to let area know there are resources for them to tap into for help in making these decisions. The Illinois Commerce Commission, the Citizen’s Utility Board, the Attorney General’s office all have consumer divisions that are available to help them through the process,” says McFadden.

The consortium suspended the program after Ameren announced its costs would be cheaper. Residents in areas served by the consortium may still select an alternative supplier but McFadden says consumers need to read the fine print.
