Minor Damage Reported in Downtown Springfield Hilton Fire

Several fire crews responded to the Hilton in downtown Springfield Wednesday afternoon.

Fire Chief Ken Fustin says it’s unclear where the fire began, but it was largely contained to the laundry room. Smoke traveled up stairwells and elevator shafts, prompting fire crews to bring in industrial fans to clear it out.

No flames were ever visible from the street, and the building didn’t suffer fire damage but Fustin says there was smoke and water damage in the Bennigans restaurant on the first floor. It’s unclear so far how the fire will affect Bennigans’ operations.

All the hotel’s guests were evacuated, they’re staying at the President Abraham Lincoln Springfield, a Doubletree by Hilton, across the street.

Adams and Monroe streets were blocked off between 7th and 9th.

It’s unclear what started the fire.
