Bishop Weighs-In on Hobby Lobby Decision

This time of year gives us a chance to consider our freedoms, and the leader of the 28-county Catholic Diocese of Springfield says that should include religious freedom.

Bishop Thomas John Paprocki describes how he, meeting with fellow bishops, created the Fortnight for Freedom: “It was our first meeting of the Ad Hoc Committee on Religious Liberty,” he says. “I was very much aware of the Feast of St Thomas More, beginning on June 22, and trying to tie that in to the Fourth of July.”

In his remarks, Paprocki says the media are misrepresenting the “Hobby Lobby” decision, leading the public to believe that the employers in the Supreme Court case oppose contraception. In truth, Paprocki says, the business owners involved are not even Catholic; they are opposed to some forms of contraception which could be considered “chemical abortion.” That, says Paprocki, is just as offensive as “physical abortion.”

A few dozen people of faith, not all of them Catholic, gathered for readings, prayers, and songs in the noon-hour sunshine next to the Abe Lincoln statue in front of the Capitol.
