Residents of the Bel-Aire Motel are not worried about calls for its closure and subsequent demolition because of disrepair and code violations.

One resident, who didn’t want to be named, says while it’s not a swank apartment, it’s home to dozens of people. He says he is not worried about getting kicked out anytime soon and says improvements are being made.

“[Crews] are fixing everything here,” he says. “We are getting a new roof and they are doing the parking lot. [Alderman] Cory Jobe wants to shut it down so he can get re-elected. They won’t shut it down, they can’t shut it down,” says the man. “I’ve lived here for seven years and haven’t had any problems.”

Jobe this week called on the mayor to shutter the building, just north of Stanford on 6th street, within ten business days.

The resident says he lives there because it’s convenient to his job and affordable. He pointed out an almost vacant parking lot on a weekday afternoon and says most of his neighbors have jobs and look out after one another.

Rauner Issues Pardons

Illinois Republican gubernatorial candidate businessman Bruce Rauner participates in a Republican gubernatorial candidate debate Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014, in Springfield, Ill. The four Republican gubernatorial candidates said that they’ll be willing to work with unions if elected but differed on how to approach the relationship during a downstate debate that largely focused on pension reform, taxes and just briefly on personal issues that have dogged some of the candidates.

Rauner granted 10 and denied 200 clemency petitions.
