Audit Commission Agrees to Postpone NRI Hearings

The Legislative Audit Commission put the political theatrics aside Thursday to reach an agreement on when to take testimony on the Neighborhood Recovery Initiative.

After an eight-hour hearing on Wednesday, Republicans and Democrats on the panel moved more quickly today to reach a deal to give federal prosecutors the 90 days they requested to finish their investigation.

State Rep. Frank Mautino (D-Spring Valley) says he and the co-chairman of the commission, State Sen. Jason Barrickman (R-Bloomington), have agreed to make sure before the next hearing that prosecutors won’t need more time.

“Eighty days into that, Senator Barrickman will call and have a discussion with the U.S. attorney to see if either the investigation is done, or if there’s someone that we should not talk to,” Mautino said, “and we will respect that.”

Mautino had argued on Wednesday for language that would require the commission to get permission from federal prosecutors before taking testimony. Republicans felt that was unnecessary.

The next hearing of the commission is set for Oct. 8 in Chicago, just weeks before the November election.
