A Little Rain, Please? Illinois Crops Could Use It

Illinois crops remain in good shape, though the weather has been dry.

“There are a number of places where they’re saying that we need a rain,” says USDA state statistician Mark Schleusener. “I got a couple of comments that, one more rain and this corn crop will be made. That’s probably true for a good amount of acres.”

Schleusener says the soybean crop is probably two or three rains away.

Fifth-five percent of corn is in the dough stage, and it’s just entering the dent stage. Dough is ahead of average, dent behind.

Soybeans are 91 percent blooming and 65 percent setting pods as of Sunday. Both are ahead of averages.

Good or excellent conditions are reported for 81 percent of corn and 77 percent of soybeans.

The USDA fall harvest forecast will be out Aug. 11.
